Drunk Truck Driver Runs Red Light and Crashes into Car, Two Dead

A drunk truck driver crashes into a car shortly after running a red light on Monday night at 11:40 p.m. Multiple reports confirm that the driver attempted to the flee the scene of the accident – a tragedy that killed two people.

According to witnesses, the pickup truck was traveling eastbound on 38th St when the driver, 26-year-old Dataniel Shamaar Gilbert, failed to come to a complete stop at a red traffic light. Once he entered the intersection, the report states that his truck T-boned a car that was traveling northbound at the time.

23-year-old Delaney Frye and Nicolas Hatfield, who were both inside of the car at the time of the crash, passed away at the scene. Gilbert fled the scene of the accident on foot, according to local police officers. However, he was apprehended shortly thereafter nearly one block away and transported by medics to Eskenazi Hospital to receive treatment for his minor injuries.

Gilbert currently faces two separate counts of vehicle homicide while intoxicated in addition to two counts of fleeing the scene of an accident that resulted in death.

Additional reports indicate that a fourth person was injured during the aftermath of the automobile crash. Flying debris from the pickup truck’s flatbed reportedly struck the individual even though the extent of his injuries has not yet been confirmed.

According to Indiana state code,  law enforcement officers are required to “investigate and submit a written report” for any motor vehicle crash that results in bodily injury, death or a minimum of $1,000 in property damage.

Fox 59 reports that Gilbert was charged back in March for unsafe lane movement and driving with a suspended license. He was also charged with operating a vehicle under the influence while endangering a person in addition to operating a motor vehicle with a BAC equivalent to at least 0.15. He received an additional driving while suspended charge back in June.
