Some of the most dangerous sorts of accidents are those involve bicycles. And when the accident involves a young person, it can be doubly tragic. Thankfully, this was not the case this week in a South Bend bicycle accident.
When the police responded to the accident scene on Indiana-933, they expected the worst. They knew they were responding to a bicycle accident and they knew it involved a young girl. When they arrived at the scene, they found the 16-year old victim on the side of Indiana-933.
The accident happened near Darden Road. The girl was trying to cross the road with her friends, who were also on their bikes. The other girls managed to make it across the road without incident. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the 16-year old rider.
As she was attempting to cross the road, she was struck by an SUV. The authorities did not release the name of the girl as she is a minor. They would have needed to talk to her parents before they did anything like that. They also didn’t identify the name of the person who hit her.
The girl was rushed to Memorial Hospital near South Bend. She was sent there to be treated for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. There has been no update on her condition.
There is a chance that the SUV that hit the cyclist did not stick around. The police are still investigating the accident. For now, they haven’t said either way if the driver stayed to cooperate or not.
In cases like this, the victim’s family may very well have a legal claim against the driver. It will depend on the outcome of the police investigation.
